The Powell Peralta Post (vids 1-7)

No company in the industry has had such a voice as Powell Peralta. Spanning the 80′s and early 90′s Powell Peralta released a video every year between 1985 and 1990. In these videos they relayed the progression of skateboarding over a decade and at the same time made it entertaining for the masses. Early on the company introduced "The Bones Brigade" a collection of skaters ranging from up and comers to seasoned pro’s. The first video Bones Brigade Video Show in ’85 was a real showcase of what Powell Peralta had to offer, although directed at skaters mainly, this video appealed to many as it presented skateboarding in a new way. Future Primitive in ’86 solidified Powell Peralta as a family company and one that cared about the progression of its riders. The Bones Brigade were a group of skaters with rockstar status at this point. While most videos concentrated purely on skateboarding, Powell Peralta released a video in ’87 "The Search For Animal Chin", that changed the sport from an underground art form to a recognised sport of sorts. The secret……it had a storyline!!!!. This video has been seen by many people and alot of them are not skateboarders. This is the influence Powell Peralta had on the industry and the masses. Public Domain in ’88 brought about a change in the form of new skaters being showcased, although the Bones Brigade still existed, this video was an introduction to the next generation. Axe Rated in ’88 was an attempt at portraying the artistc and individual element of skateboarding. Skateboarding was going thru a change and rival companies were appearing that were bringing a fresh perspective. This brings us to a video that completely blew the industry away. Just as skateboarding was becoming more acceptable Ban This in ’89 threw that out the window literally and wrenched skateboarding back from the masses. Pulling it underground again was a stroke of genius skateboarding had progressed to a point where limits were broken and a new level had been set. Skateboarders were again outcasts of society but this role now suited the growth of the sport. In 1990 Propaganda was released and heralded in the beginning of a new decade full of boundary breaking skateboarding. Underground and outcast skaters loved it and thrived pushing the sport to a whole new level. These were the glory years. The 90′s were a dark and turbulent time for skateboarding but this is not about the ’90′s. This is the story of the Bones Brigade and Powell Peralta. Enjoy the trip.
